DIY Restoring of Bamboo Fly Rods

I have been a history teacher for 29 years, and currently work at the Fox Chapel Area School District. My interest in fly fishing and fly tying started in my Jr. High days, and I caught some of my first trout on the fly at my buddy Nick’s camp along the Sinnemahoning in the late 1980s. About the same time, I also inherited my grandfather’s South Bend bamboo fly rod and automatic fly reel. Fast forward a few years and one of my jobs in college was working for an antique dealer and furniture refinisher, and I built my first graphite fly rod in 1999. So I think my love of history, appreciation for antiques and interest in fly fishing and rod building set me on the path to working on bamboo rods.
